Welcome to My Solar Oven!

Thanks for stopping by!

This is the first post on our blog, so an introduction seemed like the right place to start. Who we are, what we make, and why the sun deserves more credit than it usually gets in the kitchen.

Who we are

My Solar Oven is a veteran-owned family business in North Carolina. We've been around solar cooking for years, and eventually we decided to build something of our own.

We're small, and that's the point. When you order from us, your money doesn't disappear into a warehouse somewhere. It goes to a family that cares whether your oven arrives intact and does what we said it would do.

What it actually is

An insulated box with reflectors that focus sunlight onto your food. On a clear winter day it holds 250 to 350 degrees. On a clear summer day, 350 to 400. That's enough heat to bake bread, roast a chicken, simmer a stew, or cook a pot of rice and beans.

No propane. No charcoal. No electricity. Just the sun.

Why people use them

Preparedness folks want a cooking method that still works when the power is out and the propane tank is empty. Campers and hikers like leaving fuel at home. Homesteaders move the cooking outside in July, which drops the electric bill and keeps the kitchen from turning into an oven itself. Plenty of people just like the idea of a fuel that's free and never runs out.

And some think it's a little bit magical to set a pot of food out in the yard in the morning, go do something else, and come back to dinner.

All good reasons.

What's next

We'll use this space for recipes we've actually cooked in the oven, tips for getting good results season by season, and stories from customers. A bit of behind-the-scenes on running a small family business, too.

If there's something you want us to write about, tell us. We read every message.

Thanks for being here at the beginning.
