Welcome to My Solar Oven!
Hi there, and thanks for stopping by.
This is the very first post on our blog, and it felt right to start with a simple introduction: who we are, what we make, and why we think the sun is one of the most underrated tools in your kitchen.
Who We Are
My Solar Oven is a veteran-owned, family-owned small business based in North Carolina. Our family has been around solar cooking for years, and we decided to build something of our own. We're small, but that's kind of the point. When you order from us, you're not funneling money into some faceless warehouse. You're supporting a family business that actually cares whether your oven shows up in good shape and works the way we said it would.
What Is My Solar Oven, Exactly?
My Solar Oven is pretty much what it sounds like. It's an insulated box with reflectors that concentrate sunlight to heat food, reaching temperatures between 250°F and 350°F on a winter sunny day, and between 350°F and 425°F on a hot summer sunny day. That's plenty of heat to bake bread, roast a chicken, simmer a stew, or cook a pot of rice and beans.
No propane. No charcoal. No electricity. Just the sun.
People use them for all kinds of reasons. Some folks are into off-grid living or preparedness and want a reliable backup cooking method. Some especially appreciate the sustainability of our most environmentally friendly and renewable resource - the sun!
Many who camp and hike and like the idea of cooking without hauling fuel. Some are homesteaders looking to save on summer electric bills by moving the cooking outside. And some folks just think it's a fun, slightly magical thing to put a pot of food out in the yard in the morning and come back a few hours later to a finished meal.
All of those are good reasons.
What's Next
Over the coming weeks and months, we'll be using this blog to share recipes we've actually cooked in the oven, tips for getting the best results in different seasons, stories from customers, and a bit of the behind-the-scenes of running a small family business. If there's something specific you'd like us to write about, let us know. We read every message.
Thanks again for being here at the beginning. We think you're going to love cooking with the sun.
